Overview of Sung Sot Cave

Sung Sot Cave, also known as Surprise Cave, is the largest and most stunning cave in Halong Bay. With its impressive stalactites and unique rock formations, it’s a must-visit during your trip. The cave is nestled among limestone mountains and features two large chambers filled with fascinating stalagmites.

Legend

Thousands of tourists visit Sung Sot Cave each year. Discovered by the French in 1901, it was originally named “Grotte des Surprises.” The cave is tied to the legend of Thanh Giong, who flew to Heaven after defeating invaders, leaving behind his sword and horse to protect the people. Signs of this legendary battle, including trails and small lakes, can be seen inside the cave.

Structure

Since opening to visitors in 1993, just before Halong Bay became a UNESCO World Heritage site, Sung Sot Cave has been a favorite. To enter, you must climb 50 steps through lush greenery, which leads to a captivating atmosphere filled with soft light.

The cave has two large chambers. The first resembles an “Opera House,” with stunning stalactites and flowstones formed over millions of years. A tunnel connects to the second chamber, which can hold up to a thousand people and has beautiful views. Inside, you’ll find a large freshwater lake and may even spot playful monkeys.

Transportation

To reach Sung Sot Cave from Halong City, head along Hai Quan Street for about 4 kilometers to Bai Chay Tourist Wharf. From there, you can take a canoe or boat to the cave. It’s also possible to enjoy the Halong Bay Cruise Deals that allow visits to Sung Sot Cave and other attractions, often featuring activities like kayaking. Consider Athena Cruise or Pelican Cruise for a great experience.

Sung Sot Cave is one of 59 officially registered caves in Halong Bay and is the most renowned, earning its legendary status with visitors.
