Overview of Lan Ha Bay
Lan Ha Bay, situated southeast of Cat Ba Island, consists of over 300 stunning karst islands and limestone formations. As a geological extension of Halong Bay, it boasts equal beauty but is less frequented and more tranquil, making it an ideal escape for those seeking serenity.
Location
Located in the Gulf of Tonkin in northeastern Vietnam, Lan Ha Bay tours are renowned for their breathtaking scenery, including towering cliffs, pristine beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Its unique ecology features a diverse range of flora and fauna, positioning it as a must-visit destination within Halong Bay Trips.
With approximately 400 islets adorned with lush greenery, Lan Ha Bay offers a more secluded atmosphere that is hard to find elsewhere. The bay is home to around 200 species of fish, 500 species of mollusks, 400 species of arthropods, and various hard and soft corals. Larger marine creatures, such as seals and three dolphin species, also inhabit the area.
Places & Activities
Lan Ha Bay presents a largely untouched landscape characterized by its dense limestone mountains partitioned by smaller bays and inlets. Here are some must-visit spots:
Cat Ba Island: The largest island in the Cat Ba Archipelago, perfect for exploring lush jungles, majestic caves, and enjoying stunning sunsets.
Monkey Island: Accessible through tours from Cat Ba, this island offers spectacular panoramic views of Lan Ha Bay from its summit, reached by a short hike.
Cannon Fort: Perched on a 177-meter hill, this historic fortification is open to visitors from 8 AM to 5 PM and provides breathtaking scenic views.
Luon Cave: Located on Bo Hon Island, Luon Cave is among the most famous spots in Lan Ha Bay, offering breathtaking natural surroundings for exploration.
With numerous beautiful, small beaches along the mountains’ bases, visitors can swim, host private beach BBQs, or camp overnight here. Adventures include kayaking through Cai Beo floating village, the Van Boi central area, and Ba Trai Dao, as well as relaxing on Cat Dua and Bai Cat beaches.
Weather
Lan Ha Bay can be visited year-round, but the best times are from March to June and October to November. This period features mostly sunny weather, ideal for outdoor activities, though it coincides with peak domestic tourism. After June, the weather can be unpredictable, with an increased risk of typhoons and storms.
